González Prize 2003 – Markus Lüpertz

Markus Lüpertz 2003/2004

Born in 1941 in Germany, Markus Lüpertz is considered one of the most important representatives of German Neo-Expressionism.

In his figurative painting, he uses a repertoire of motifs deriving from different registers with references to art history, Greco-Roman mythology, and contemporary history. Starting in 1981, he turns to sculpture, considering that it is related to painting. His large-scale multi-colored bronzes, with rough forms, show his interest in Antiquity.
