Julio González in « Masaveu Collection. 20th c. Spanish Art from Picasso to Barceló », Fundación Masaveu, Madrid, through July 20, 2025

Opened in 2019 in Madrid, the Fundación Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson uses its extensive collection to retrace Spanish 20th century art in its new exhibition « Masaveu Collection. 20th c. Spanish art from Picasso to Barceló ».

A sculpture and several drawings by Julio González are on display in a gallery devoted to trailblazers of the Spanish avant-garde, including Juan Gris, Maria Blanchard, and Pablo Picasso.

Among his works displayed is « Masque Acéré (Sharp Mask) » (1929-1930). González’s skillful cutting, bending and soldering transforms a simple sheet of scrap metal into a scowling face with a furrowed brow, gaping, triangular holes for eyes and nose, and a small frown. The sharp contours augment the intensity of the piercing, disgruntled expression.

The exhibition « Colección Masaveu. Arte español del siglo XX, de Picasso a Barceló » will be on view at the Fundacion Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson, Madrid through July 20, 2025.
