LES AMOUREUX II – THE LOVERS II
1932 -1933
Medium : Iron, cast, welded
Dimensions : 44,5 x 19,5 x 19 cm
“Les amoureux II” (“The Lovers II”) is a sculpture in forged and soldered iron, created ca. 1932-1933 by Julio González. This sculpture dates to the most abstract phase of González’s career, yet remains grounded in observed reality. It is composed of a hollow, cylindrical vessel supported by a conical base and a vertical rod. The geometric forms cut into the piece of sheet metal placed at the opening of the vessel outline the profiles of two lovers kissing. These abstracted profiles stand out against the dark shadow created by the hollow recess. The rounded extremity of the vessel evokes a single head, as though the two bodies had fused into one. This work steeped in duality–light/dark, full/empty, matter/space, male/female–, reinvents the universal theme of the amorous liaison.
