DEUX PAYSANNES – TWO FARM WOMEN
1929
Medium : Iron, cast, cut, bent
Dimensions : 25,3 x 12 x 5 cm
The two peasant women in conversation are represented with simplified forms that have been broken down into flat planes that capture the interplay of light and shadow on the metal surface. This work represents an important turning point in Gonzalez’s career, when he abandons painting to entirely devote himself to sculpture. At the same time, he renews his work by introducing avant-gardist techniques, as we see in the cubist treatment applied here. This adoption of the avant-garde, along with his technical prowess and his personal vision, open new possibilities for metallic sculpture, that are anticipated in Deux Paysannes.
