\u201cJulio Gonz\u00e1lez: Ser artista (Being an artist)\u201d opened on October 27, 2022 at the IVAM Centre Julio Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This extensive retrospective mobilizes some 250 works–a significant portion of the IVAM\u2019s extensive Julio Gonz\u00e1lez collection–to retrace and reevaluate his multi-faceted creative trajectory. The majority of these were donated to the museum by Carmen Martinez and Vivianne Grimminger, the Gonz\u00e1lez Estate\u2019s previous right-holders, along with thousands of the Gonz\u00e1lez family\u2019s archival materials, including photographs, correspondence and administrative documents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJulio Gonz\u00e1lez: Being an artist\u201d is nourished by a thorough re-reading of these extensive archives by the exhibition\u2019s curator, Juan Jos\u00e9 LaHuerta, who included a selection of these largely unpublished documents in the exhibition and in its catalogue to provide additional insight and context to the artwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This reexamination of the Gonz\u00e1lez archives allowed LaHuerta to revisit and nuance certain commonly held notions about Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s life and career. The exhibition strives to let Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s extraordinary, multi-faceted life and work speak for itself, in order to distance it from overly restrictive stylistic categories or formalist readings that misrepresented his work, specifically in regard to the place of abstraction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
