Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts de Tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an innovative, personal interpretation of the ancient Greek myth in which the young nymph transforms into a tree to thwart the sun god Apollo\u2019s unwanted advances. \u00a0The ethereal rods at the top of the sculpture, representing Daphn\u00e9\u2019s upper body, contrast with the solid fullness of the rectangular iron planes, representing her lower body being transformed into a tree trunk. \u00a0This subject resonated with Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s interest in metamorphoses, as well as his aesthetic experiments concerning full vs light, linear forms. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/20231012_112018-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/20231012_112018-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/20231012_112018-225x300.jpg 225w, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDaphn\u00e9\u201d is displayed in the museum\u2019s \u201cgalerie de Diane\u201d, home to 18<sup>th<\/sup> century French works like Jean-Antoine Houdon\u2019s \u201cDiane chasseresse\u201d (1790).\u00a0 This neoclassical bronze depicts the goddess of the hunt mid-stride, gracefully balanced on her left foot.\u00a0 Her bow and arrow in hand, she seems to be preparing to strike her target.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rich dialogue ensues between these two depictions of the female body inspired by classical myths and their contrasting formal and thematic qualities&#8211;naturalistic vs. abstracted, curved vs. straight, smooth vs. rugged, in movement vs. in transformation, confident vs. distressed.\u00a0 The conversation is further enriched by the presence in the same gallery of additional contemporary artworks on loan from the Pompidou Center\u2019s collection, including photography by Val\u00e9rie Belin and Serge Mouill\u00e9\u2019s \u201cObjet Cactus\u201d (1960-1980).
