“Julio Gonz\u00e1lez, Pablo Picasso, and the dematerialization of sculpture” opens at the Fundaci\u00f3n MAPFRE on September 23, 2022. This major exhibition benefitted from the support of a number of prestigious international institutions, including Gonz\u00e1lez Administration, in order to shed new light on the multiple points of convergence between the art of Julio Gonz\u00e1lez and Pablo Picasso, two artists who both revolutionized 20th century art. In addition to providing new perspective on the well-known collaboration of these two Paris-based compatriots on Guillaume Apollinaire’s funerary monument from 1928-1932, the exhibition also examines the links between these artists at the beginning of their careers between Barcelona and Paris, and their politically engaged work during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The exhibition also places their sculptural innovations, namely, the dematerialization of form, in the broader context of the interwar avant-garde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This important exhibition, curated by the late Spanish art historian Tom\u00e1s Llorens, a Julio Gonz\u00e1lez specialist and author of Gonz\u00e1lez’s new catalogue raisonn\u00e9, is the apotheosis of his remarkable career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
