Metamorphosis of Modern Identity &#8221; (July 28, 2020 to January 10, 2021).  With eleven works displayed, Julio Gonz\u00e1lez is the artist that is best represented in the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exhibition explores the role of the mask as a transformative element in the representation of the human figure, and specifically the face, in modern art.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques.jpg 563w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques-145x101.jpg 145w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques-24x17.jpg 24w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques-36x25.jpg 36w, https:\/\/juliogonzalez.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Goya-masques-48x33.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">It retraces how the mask, an accessory conceived to disguise and conceal, long associated with death and the grotesque, for example in <strong><em>Disparate de Carnaval <\/em>by Goya (1815-1819)<\/strong>, becomes a catalyst for avant-gardist experimentation and discovery from the beginning of the 20th century. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is largely thanks to the influence of masks from non-European cultures, namely African and Oceanic. At this time, in addition to his painting, which  Gonz\u00e1lez considered his primary focus, he created small sculptures, including masks in plaster or metal using the &#8220;repouss\u00e9&#8221; technique. This is evident in Gonz\u00e1lez&#8217;s works displayed in M\u00e1laga, for example, <strong><em>Masque aust\u00e8re<\/em>, a drawing from 1940<\/strong>. His works, highly diverse from a formal perspective, are imbued alternately with humor, fantasy, tenderness or even the tragedy of war.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition &#8220;Masks.
