“Julio González, Pablo Picasso, and the dematerialization of sculpture” opens at the Fundación MAPFRE on September 23, 2022. This major exhibition benefitted from the support of a number of prestigious international institutions, including González Administration, in order to shed new light on the multiple points of convergence between the art of Julio González and Pablo Picasso, two artists who both revolutionized 20th century art. In addition to providing new perspective on the well-known collaboration of these two Paris-based compatriots on Guillaume Apollinaire’s funerary monument from 1928-1932, the exhibition also examines the links between these artists at the beginning of their careers between Barcelona and Paris, and their politically engaged work during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The exhibition also places their sculptural innovations, namely, the dematerialization of form, in the broader context of the interwar avant-garde.

This important exhibition, curated by the late Spanish art historian Tomás Llorens, a Julio González specialist and author of González’s new catalogue raisonné, is the apotheosis of his remarkable career.

“Julio González, Pablo Picasso, and the dematerialization of sculpture” will be on view at the Fundacion MAPFRE in Madrid from September 23, 2022 through January 8, 2023.
