“Montserrat’s screaming head” exposed at the Pompidou Center Malaga

“Montserrat’s screaming head”, a powerful sculpture created by Julio Gonzalez in 1942, is on display at the Pompidou Center Malaga. This is part of the new hanging of their permanent collection, “Modern utopias”. The Catalan peasant woman is a favorite subject of Gonzalez’s to capture his solidarity with his countrymen and women suffering during the Spanish Civil War. Gonzalez continues to work on this subject after the Republican defeat and during the Second World War. The “Montserrat” comes to incarnate the suffering of all of Europe under fascist attack.
