“César” Retrospective: an artistic disciple of Gonzalez at the Pompidou Center Paris

The Pompidou Center Paris presented the first retrospective of César Baldaccini (1921-1998), called “César”. This important French sculptor’s innovative work was inspired by Julio Gonzalez’s iron sculpture. César’s “Welded Iron sculptures”, created in Paris the the postwar era, include human and animal figures, composed from sheet and scrap metal welded using industrial techniques. This creative process is clearly in line with Gonzalez’s revolutionary approach to metal sculpture. César’s metal work paves the way for other forms of innovative sculptural expression, including his “Compressions”, “Prints”, “Wrappings” and “Expansions”.
